How does a heat pump work?

Domestic Heat pumps uses a refrigeration cycle to extract energy from the surrounding air to heat up the water in your geyser.

It works on the same principles as an Air conditioner but in reverse.

FAQ’s

How much money will a heat pump save me?

A domestic heat pump with a real-life COP of 3 (efficiency of 300%) will save you 66% of the electricity currently used with a normal electrical element. So, for example, a family of 4 with a 200L geyser currently spends R1260/month to heat the water. If a heat pump with a COP of 3 is connected to this geyser and the current electrical element is disconnected, then they will not only use R420/month to heat the water. This equates into a saving of more than R62 000 over the next 5 years.

How long does a heat pump take to heat water?

An ITS 5.4 heat pump will heat the water slightly faster than a 4kW electrical element typically found in 200L geysers. The ITS 5.4 heat pump produces 5.4kW of thermal energy under specific conditions while using as little as 1.2kW to do so.

What is the average payback period for a heat pump system?

Typically, the systems at current energy prices will pay for itself within 2-3 years.

How hot can the heat pump make the water?

Our standard range of heat pumps are designed for a maximum temperature of 60°C, however we also have a range that could operate as high as 80°C.

What does the installation involve?

The heat pump is mounted on the outside wall of your house as close as possible to geyser. The heat pump is piped to the existing electric geyser using copper pipe either into your geysers solar ready port or directly piped into the hot and cold-water inlet/outlets.

How long will the installation take?

Typically, less than 1 day.

Can a heat pump work with my existing solar geyser and what are the benefits?

Yes, it can. Solar geysers uses no electricity during a typical sunny day to provide hot water for the evenings. Typical households requires hot water both at night and early mornings, this means that you still need to use Eskom to heat your water in the mornings or during rainy days. The electrical element in your solar geyser is very inefficient at heating water. A heat pump could save you a further 60%+ on your water heating bill.

Can a heat pump be used on my existing solar system installed at my home?

Yes, it can. Because heat pumps use much less electricity than traditional electric geysers, it is possible to be part of your essential loads on your inverter and batteries.
