How Do Solar Power Systems Work?

Each solar cell contains a semiconductor that incorporates two thin silicone wafers. An electrical field is then created within the solar cell as a result of the positive and negative charge between the two silicone wafers. 

As soon as sunlight reaches the photovoltaic cells, the cell becomes energised and separates the electrons from the atoms inside the semiconductor. The motion that is created by the moving electrons then creates electricity.

The electricity that is generated in this way is called direct current electricity and will require conversion to alternating current electricity for it to be usable. To do this the electricity must pass through an inverter which will perform the conversion.
